What is Ones Tens Hundreds Thousands?
Ones tens hundreds thousands is the rank or position of a digit in a large number. It determines at what place value the digit is stationed. This position can be known by referring to the place value chart that helps in both large and small numbers. The order of the digits in any number is different according to the position and it starts from ones tens hundreds thousands and so on starting from the right of a number moving forward to the left. Before we move on to the place value charts to understand the positions, let us first see what a place value is.
Definition of Place Value
Place value is the value of a digit according to its position in a number such as ones, tens, hundreds, and so on. While representing a number in the general form, the position of each digit will be expanded that start from units place or ones. For example, 7 in 1748 represents 7 hundred, or 700. However, 7 in 3878 represents 7 tens or 70. The value of the digit in a number depends on the position irrespective of the digit being the same in two numbers. Let us write 1748 in the expanded form,
1748 = 1 × 1000 + 7 × 100 + 4 × 10 + 8
1748 = 1000 + 700 + 40 + 8
Charts for Ones Tens Hundreds Thousands
As we have already seen, the position of the digit gives value to the number. These charts, also known as place value charts, help in aligning the position of ones tens hundreds thousands. To identify the positional values of digits in a number accurately, firstly, write the digits in the place value chart and then write the numbers in the usual and the standard form. One of the main aspects of identifying the position is the use of separators or commas. There are three kinds of place value charts that define the positions of a digit with the help of separators, they are:
- Indian Place Value Chart
- International Place Value Chart
- Decimal Place Value Chart
Indian Place Value Chart
The Indian place value chart finds the value of each digit in a number based on its position as per the Indian numeral system. The chart given below shows us the following observations:
- The nine places are grouped into four periods: Ones, Thousands, Lakhs, and Crores.
- All periods are separated by a comma while writing the number in its numeral form.
- Starting from the right, Ones being the first period, consist of three place values i.e. ones, tens, and hundreds.
- Thousands is the second that consists of two place values: thousands and ten thousands.
- Then comes Lakhs that consists of two place values: lakhs and ten lakhs.
- Finally is Crores that consists of two place values: crores and ten crores.
- While reading a number, all the digits in the same period are read together along with the name of the period, except the ones period.
International Place Value Chart
International place value chart determines the position of a digit based on the international number system that is defined by the separators. It is similar to the Indian place value chart with a few differences. The chart below shows us the following observations:
- The nine places are grouped into three periods: Ones, Thousands, and Millions.
- The numbers are separated by a comma after every three digits, starting from the right end.
- Ones which consists of three place values: ones, tens, and hundreds.
- Thousands which again consist of three place values: thousands, ten thousands, and hundred thousands.
- Millions also consist of three place values: million, ten million, and hundred million.
Decimal Place Value Chart
The decimal place value chart is slightly different from the other two. A decimal number is divided into two parts by a decimal point i.e. whole number part and fractional part. For example, 25.7, 25 is the whole number part and .7 is the fractional part. Hence the chart defines the position of a digit in both the parts i.e. before the decimal point the values start with ones, followed by tens, hundreds, and so on, while the place values after the decimal point start from tenths, followed by hundredths, then thousandths and so on.
Let us solve an example by referring to the above chart.
Example: Find the place value of 7 and 3 in the given decimal number: 47.83
Solution:
If we refer to the decimal place value chart, then we see that 7 comes under the ones place. So, its place value is 7 ones, or, 7.
Now, let us check the place value of 3. We can see that 3 comes under the hundredths column. Therefore, the place value of 3 is 3 hundredths, which means 3/100, or, 0.03.

Example 1: A number has 5 thousands, 2 hundreds, 8 tens, and 9 ones. What is the number?
Solution:
The place value of the following digits are:
5 thousands = 5,000
2 hundreds = 200
8 tens = 80
9 ones = 9
Adding these numbers together, we get: 5,000 + 200 + 80 + 9 = 5289. Therefore, the number is 5289.

Example 2: Find the place value of 1 and 6 in the given decimal number: 12.946
Solution:
If we refer to the decimal place value chart, then we see that 1 comes under the tens place. So, its place value is 1 tens, or, 10.
Now, let us check the place value of 6. We can see that 6 comes under the thousandths column. Therefore, the place value of 6 is 6 thousandths, which means 6/1000, or, 0.006.
