If we refer to the decimal place value chart, then we see that 4 comes under the tens place. So, its place value is 4 tens, or, 40.
Now, let us check the place value of 8. We can see that 8 comes under the tenths column. Therefore, the place value of 8 is 8 tenths, which means 8/10, or, 0.8
Decimal Chart to Hundredths
If we refer to the decimal place value chart, we see that the first digit to the right of the decimal point shows the number of tenths. The second digit to the right of the decimal point shows the number of hundredths. For example, in a decimal number, 12.54, the second digit to the right of the decimal point is 4 which comes under the column of hundredths. In other words, 12.54 can be expanded as 12.54 = 1 tens + 2 ones + 5 tenths + 4 hundredths. This can also be written as 10 + 2 + 0.5 + 0.04. In other words, it means, 12.54 = 10 + 2 + 5/10 + 4/100
As we move to the right of the decimal, we see that the place value after tenths and hundredths is thousandths. For example, in 0.859, the number 9 comes in the thousandths place. This means its place value is 9/1000 or 0.009.
