Write the next three rational numbers to complete the pattern: -8/7, -16/14, -24/21, -32/28, __, __, __.
Solution:
Given, the rational numbers are -8/7, -16/14, -24/21 and -32/28
We have to find the next three rational numbers to complete the pattern.
From the pattern we observe that the denominator is a multiple of 7.
-8/7 = (-8) × 1/7 × 1
-16/14 = (-8) × 2 / 7 × 2
On multiplying the numerator and denominator by 5,
-8/7 = (-8) × 5 / 7 × 5 = -40/35
On multiplying the numerator and denominator by 6,
-8/7 = (-8) × 6 / 7 × 6 = -48/42
On multiplying the numerator and denominator by 7,
-8/7 = (-8) × 7 / 7 × 7 = -56/49
Therefore, the next three rational numbers are -40/35, -48/42 and -56/49
