Write each of the following rational numbers with positive denominators: 5/-8, 15/-28, -17/-13.
Solution:
Given, the rational numbers are 5/-8, 15/-28 and -17/-13
We have to write the rational numbers with positive denominators.
Taking 5/-8,
On multiplying numerator and denominator by (-1),
5/-8 = 5 × (-1) / (-8) × (-1)
If the signs of the factors are the same, the product is positive.
= -5/8
Therefore, 5/-8 with positive denominator is -5/8
Taking 15/-28,
On multiplying numerator and denominator by (-1),
15/-28 = 15 × (-1) / (-28) × (-1)
If the signs of the factors are the same, the product is positive.
= -15/28
Therefore, 15/-28 with positive denominator is -15/28
Taking -17/-13,
Cancelling out common signs,
-17/-13 = 17/13
Therefore, -17/-13 with positive denominator is 17/13
