Which is greater in the following? -3 5/7, 3 1/9.
Solution:
Given, the numbers are -3 5/7 and 3 1/9
We have to find a greater number.
-3 5/7 = -[3(7) + 5]/7 = -(21 + 5)/7 = -26/7
3 1/9 = [3(9) + 1]/9 = (27 + 1)/9 = 28/9
The rational numbers are -26/7 and 28/9
Taking LCM,
LCM of 7 and 9 = 7 × 9 = 63
Now, -26/7 = -26 × 9 / 7 × 9 = -234/63
28/9 = 28 × 7 / 9 × 7 = 196/63
Considering -234/63 and 196/63,
Since the denominators are same
196 > -234
So, 3 1/9 > -3 5/7
Therefore, the greater number is 3 1/9.
