Water flows from a tank with a rectangular base measuring 80 cm by 70 cm into another tank with a square base of side 60 cm. If the water in the first tank is 45 cm deep, how deep will it be in the second tank?
Solution:
The volume of water in the tank with a rectangular base = 80 × 70 × 45 cm³ = 252000cm³
The square base tank has a square base of side 60 cm.
The depth of water in the second tank will be:
60 × 60 × depth = 252000
Depth = 252000/3600 = 70 cm
The depth of water in the square base tank will be 70 cm.
✦ Try This: Water flows from a tank with a rectangular base measuring 85 cm by 80 cm into another tank with a square base of side 80 cm. If the water in the first tank is 40 cm deep, how deep will it be in the second tank?
The volume of water in the tank with a rectangular base = 85 × 80 × 45 cm³ = 306000cm³
The square base tank has a square base of side 80 cm.
The depth of water in the second tank will be:
80 × 80 × depth = 306000
Depth = 306000/6400 = 47.8 cm
