Under the condition that the temperature remains constant, the volume of gas is inversely proportional to its pressure. If the volume of gas is 630 cubic centimetres at a pressure of 360 mm of mercury, then what will be the pressure of the gas if its volume is 720 cubic centimetres at the same temperature
Solution:
At a constant temperature
Volume(V) of Gas 1/Pressure(P)
PV = k (k = positive constant)
P = 360 mm of mercury
V = 630 cm
Therefore,
PV = 360 630 = 226800
If V = 720cm then using the above equation
P(720) = 226800
P = 226800/720
P = 315 mm of mercury
✦ Try This: Under the condition that the temperature remains constant, the volume of gas is inversely proportional to its pressure. If the volume of gas is 700 cubic centimetres at a pressure of 420 mm of mercury, then what will be the pressure of the gas if its volume is 600 cubic centimetres at the same temperature?
At a constant temperature
Volume(V) of Gas 1/Pressure(P)
PV = k (k = positive constant)
P = 420 mm of mercury
V = 700 cm
Therefore,
PV = 420 700 = 2,94,000
If V = 600 cm then using the above equation
P(600) = 2,94,000
P = 2,94,000/600
P = 490 mm of mercury
