Two sides of a triangle are of lengths 5 cm and 1.5 cm. The length of the third side of the triangle cannot be
a. 3.6 cm
b. 4.1 cm
c. 3.8 cm
d. 3.4 cm
Solution:
From the figure
AB = 5 cm
BC = 1.5 cm
So the third side is AC
We know that
AB - BC < AC < AB + BC
Substituting the values
5 - 1.5 < AC < 5 + 1.5
3.5 < AC < 6.5
It cannot be 3.4 as it is less than 3.5
Therefore, the length of the third side of the triangle cannot be 3.4 cm.
✦ Try This: Two sides of a triangle are of lengths 4 cm and 2.5 cm. The length of the third side of the triangle cannot be a. 1.4 cm, b. 2.1 cm, c. 3.8 cm, d. 4.4 cm
