Solution:
Given, two identical cones are joined together along their bases.
The radius of base is 8 cm
The height of cone is 15 cm
We have to find the surface area of the shape so formed.
Curved surface area of cone = πrl
l = √r² + h²
Given, r = 8 cm
h = 15 cm
l = √8² + 15²
= √64+225
= √289
l = 17 cm
Curved surface area of new shape so formed = curved surface area of cone 1 + curved surface area of cone 2
Since the cones are identical, so the curved surface area will be equal.
So, the curved surface of the new shape so formed = 2 × curved surface area of cone
Curved surface area of cone = (22/7)(8)(17)
= 2992/7
= 427.43 cm²
Curved surface area of new shape so formed = 2(427.43)
= 854.858
= 855 cm²
Therefore, the surface area of the new shape so formed is 855 cm²
