Three cubes each of side 10 cm are joined end to end. Find the surface area of the resultant figure.
Solution:
By joining three cubes of side 10cm the resultant solid will be a cuboid of length 30cm, width 10 cm and height 10 cm.
The surface area of the resultant figure will be:
Surface Area = 2 × (10 × 30) + 2 × (10 × 30) + 2 × (10 × 10)
= 600 + 600 + 200
= 1400cm²
✦ Try This: Three cubes each of side 12 cm are joined end to end. Find the surface area of
the resultant figure.
By joining three cubes of side 12cm the resultant solid will be a cuboid of length 36cm, width 12 cm and height 12 cm.
The surface area of the resultant figure will be:
Surface Area = 2 × (12 × 36) + 2 × (12 × 36) + 2 × (12 × 12)
= 864 + 864 + 288
= 2016cm²
