The table shows the portion of some common materials that are recycled.
Material Recycled
Paper 5/11
Aluminium cans 5/8
Glass 2/5
Scrap 3/4
(a) Is the rational number expressing the amount of paper recycled more than 1/2 or less than 1/2?
(b) Which items have a recycled amount less than 1/2?
(c) Is the quantity of aluminium cans recycled more (or less) than half of the quantity of aluminium cans?
(d) Arrange the rate of recycling the materials from the greatest to the smallest.
Solution:
(a) Is the rational number expressing the amount of paper recycled more than 1/2 or less than 1/2 ?
Rational number expressing the amount of paper recycled is 5/11 = 0.45
That is less than 1/2 = 0.5
(b) Which items have a recycled amount less than 1/2?
Paper = 5/11 = 0.45
Aluminium cans = 5/8 = 0.62
Glass = 2/5 = 0.4
Scrap = 3/4 = 0.75
So, only paper and glass items have recycled amount less than 1/2
(c) Is the quantity of aluminium cans recycled more (or less) than half of the quantity of aluminium cans?
Aluminium cans = 5/8 = 0.62
Half of it is 0.62/2 = 0.31
Clearly, it is more than its half amount
(d) Arrange the rate of recycling the materials from the greatest to the smallest.
Paper = 5/11 = 0.45
Aluminium cans = 5/8 = 0.62
Glass = 2/5 = 0.4
Scrap = 3/4 = 0.75
Scrap > Aluminium cans > Paper > Glass
