The sides of a right triangle whose hypotenuse is 17cm are _________ and _________. Fill in the blanks to make the statement true.
Solution:
Given, the sides of a right triangle whose hypotenuse is 17cm are _________ and _________.
We have to fill in the blanks to make the statement true.
For every natural number m > 1, 2m, m²-1 and m² + 1 form a pythagorean triplet.
m² + 1 = (2m)² + (m² - 1)
m² + 1 = 17
m² = 17 - 1
m² = 16
Taking square root,
m = 4
Now, 2m = 2(4) = 8 cm
m² - 1 = 4² - 1
= 16 - 1
= 15 cm
Therefore, the required sides are 8 cm and 15 cm.
