The shape of the top surface of a table is a trapezium. Find its area if its parallel sides are 1 m and 1.2 m and perpendicular distance between them is 0.8 m
Solution:
Reasoning:
The table is rectangular in the middle and a triangle at the end. Usually, the area of the problem is the sum of areas of two right-angle triangles and rectangle.
Steps:
Let the triangles be ACE and BDF
Base of the triangles (CE + FD) = (CD − EF) = 1.2 cm – 1 m = 0.2 m
Base of one triangle = CE = FD = 0.2/2 = 0.1 m
Height of the triangle = AE = BF = 0.3 m
Area of the triangle Δ ACE = Area of the triangle Δ BDF
= 1/2 × base × height
= 1/2 × 0.1 m × 0.8 m
= 0.04 m²
Area of the rectangle ABEF = L × B
= 1 m × 0.8 m = 0.8 m²
Area of the table = Area of the triangle Δ ACE + Area of the rectangle ABEF + Area of the triangle Δ BFD
= 0.04 m² × 0.8 m² + 0.04 m²
= 0.88 m²
