The following table shows the distance travelled by one of the new eco-friendly energy-efficient cars travelled on gas.
Litres 1 0.5 2 2.5 3 5
Distance in km 15 735 30 37.5 45 75.
Which type of properties are indicated by the table? How much distance will be covered by the car in 8 litres of gas
Solution:
Let x = litres of gas and
y=Distance(km)
x/y = 1/15 = 0.5/7.5 = 2/30 = 2.5/37.5 = 3/45 = 5/75 = 1/15 = k
k = positive constant of proportionality
Hence x and y are directly proportional. As x increases y also increases. In other words as distance increases more litres of gas is consumed.
x/y = 1/15
If x = 8 litres then distance covered (y) will be equal to
8/y = 1/15
y = 8 × 15
y = 120 km
Hence with 8 litres of gasoline the distance covered will be 120 km.

Which type of properties are indicated by the table? How much distance will be covered by the car in 10 litres of gas?
Let x = litres of gas and
y = Distance(km)
x/y = 1/10 = 1.5/15 = 2/20 = 3/30 = 4/40 = 5/50 = 1/10 = k
k = positive constant of proportionality
Hence x and y are directly proportional. As x increases y also increases. In other words as distance increases more litres of gas is consumed.
x/y = 1/10
If x = 10 litres then distance covered (y) will be equal to
10/y = 1/10
y = 10 × 10
y = 100 km
Hence with 10 litres of gasoline the distance covered will be 100 km.
