The figure shows the dimensions of a wall having a window and a door of a room. Write an algebraic expression for the area of the wall to be painted.
Solution:
The dimension of the wall represents a rectangle.
Area of the rectangle = length × breadth
Subtract the dimensions of the door and window.
∴ Dimension of the wall which have to be painted = Area of the rectangle - Area of the door - Area of the window
Dimension of the wall which have to be painted = [(5x + 2) × 5x] - (3x × x) - (2x × x)
= 25x² + 10x - 3x² - 2x²
= 20x² + 10x
= 10x(2x + 1) sq.units
