The degree of the sum of two polynomials each of degree 5 is always 5. Is the given statement true or false? Justify your answer
Solution:
The degree of the sum of two polynomials of the same degree is not always the same.
Example
Consider f (x) = x4 + 2
g(x) = -x4 + 4x3 + 2x
Sum = f(x) + g(x)
= x4 + 2 - x4 + 4x3 + 2x
So we get
= 4x3 + 2x + 2 is not a polynomial of degree 4
Therefore, the statement is false.
