Taking x = -4/9, y = 5/12 and z = 7/18, find: x + (y + z)
Solution:
It is given that
x = -4/9, y = 5/12 and z = 7/18
We know that
x + (y + z) = -4/9 + (5/12 + 7/18)
LCM of 12 and 18 is 36
= -4/9 + (5 × 3 + 7 × 2)/ 36
= -4/9 + (15 + 14)/36
= -4/9 + 29/36
By further calculation
= (-4 × 4 + 29)/ 36
= 13/36
Therefore, x + (y + z) is 13/36.
