Taking x = -4/9, y = 5/12 and z = 7/18, find: x - (y + z)
Solution:
It is given that
x = -4/9, y = 5/12 and z = 7/18
We know that
x - (y + z) = -4/9 - (5/12 + 7/18)
LCM of 12 and 18 is 36
= -4/9 - (5 × 3 + 7 × 2)/36
= -4/9 - (15 + 14)/36
= -4/9 - 29/36
By further calculation
= (-4 × 4 - 29)/36
= (-16 - 29)/36
= -45/36
= -5/4
Therefore, x - (y + z) is -5/4.
