Taking x = -4/9, y = 5/12 and z = 7/18, find: the rational number which when added to x gives y.
Solution:
It is given that
x = -4/9, y = 5/12 and z = 7/18
Now by adding x to A in order to obtain y
A + x = y
Substituting the values
A + (-4/9) = 5/12
We can write it as
A = 5/12 - (-4/9)
A = 5/12 + 4/9
LCM of 12 and 9 is 36
A = (5 x 3 + 4 × 4)/36
A = (15 + 16)/36
A = 31/36
Therefore, the rational number which when added to x gives y is 31/36.
