Sum of two numbers is 81. One is twice the other
(a) If smaller number is x, the other number is _____
(b) The equation formed is _____
(c) The solution of the equation is _____
(d) The numbers are _____ and _____
Solution:
Let the smaller number be x
Then the other number be 2x or (81 - x)
A/Q,
2x = 81 - x
2x + x = 81
x = 81/3
x = 27
Hence 81 - x = 54
Thus,
(a) If smaller number is x, the other number is 81 - x.
(b) The equation formed is 2x = 81 - x.
(c) The solution of the equation is 27.
(d) The numbers are 27 and 54.
✦ Try This: Sum of two numbers is 36. One is thrice the other. (a) If smaller number is x, the other number is _____, (b) The equation formed is _____, (c) The solution of the equation is _____, (d) The numbers are _____ and _____, Let the smaller number be x
Then the other number be 3x or (36 - x)
A/Q,
3x = 36 - x
3x + x = 36
x = 36/4
x = 9
Hence 36 - x = 27
Thus,
(a) If smaller number is x, the other number is 36 - x.
(b) The equation formed is 3x = 36 - x.
(c) The solution of the equation is 9.
(d) The numbers are 27 and 9.
