Simplify each of the following by using suitable property. Also name the property.
(a) [1/2 × 1/4] + [1/2 × 6]
(b) [1/5 × 2/15] - [1/5 × 2/5]
(c) -3/5 × {3/7 + (-5/6)}
Solution:
(a) [1/2 × 1/4] + [1/2 × 6]
Using distributive property
We can take 1/2 as common from the terms
= 1/2 × (1/4 + 6)
= 1/2 × (1/4 + 24/4)
= 1/2 × (25/4)
= 25/8
(b) [1/5 × 2/15] - [1/5 × 2/5]
Using distributive property
we can take 1/5 as common from the terms
= 1/5 × (2/15 - 2/5)
= 1/5 × (2/15 -6/15)
= 1/5 × (-4/15)
= -4/75
(C) -3/5 × {3/7 + (-5/6)}
Using distributive property, (-3/5 × 3/7) + (-3/5 × -5/6)
=-9/35 + 15/30
= -9/35 + 1/2
= -18/70 + 35/70
= 17/70
