Shrinking Machine: In a shrinking machine, a piece of stick is compressed to reduce its length. If 9 cm long sandwich is put into the shrinking machine below, how many cm long will it be when it emerges?
Solution:
In a shrinking machine, a piece of stick is compressed to reduce its length.
A 9 cm long sandwich is put into the shrinking machine.
We have to find the length of the sandwich when it comes out of the machine.
According to the question,
Input = 9 cm
Shrinking factor = (1/3)⁻¹
Output = 9 × (1/3)⁻¹
Using law of exponents,
a⁻ⁿ = 1/aⁿ
So, (1/3)⁻¹ = 1/3
Output = 9 × 1/3
= 3 cm.
Therefore, the length of the sandwich when it comes out of the machine is 3 cm.
