Shabnam takes 20 minutes to reach her school if she goes at a speed of 6 km/h. If she wants to reach school in 24 minutes, what should be her speed?
Solution:
Time Taken to reach School Speed at which distance is covered
20 minutes 6km/h
24 minutes x = ?
The lower the speed the more the time will be taken and it is an inverse variation. Therefore,
x = 6 × (20/24)
x = 20/4
x = 5km/h
Therefore Shabnam will take 24 minutes to reach school if she goes at a speed of 5 km/h.
✦ Try This: Shabnam takes 30 minutes to reach her school if she goes at a speed of 2 km/h. If she wants to reach school in 15 minutes, what should be her speed?
Time Taken to reach School Speed at which distance is covered
30 minutes 4km/h
15 minutes x = ?
The lower the speed the more the time will be taken. Therefore,
x = 2 × (30/15)
x = 4 km/h
Therefore Shabnam will take 15 minutes to reach school if she goes at a speed of 4 km/h.
