Rain water which falls on a flat rectangular surface of length 6 m and breadth 4 m is transferred into a cylindrical vessel of internal radius 20 cm. What will be the height of water in the cylindrical vessel if the rain fall is 1 cm. Give your answer to the nearest integer. (Take π = 3.14)
Solution:
Given, rainwater falls on a flat rectangular surface of length 6 m and breadth 4 m
Rainwater is transferred into a cylindrical vessel of internal radius 20 cm
We have to find the height of the water in the cylindrical vessel if the rainfall is 1 cm.
Volume of rainwater = volume of water in the rectangular surface with 1 cm rainfall
Volume of rainwater = 600 × 400 × 1
= 240000 cm³
Volume of cylinder = πr²h
Where, r is the radius of the cylinder
h is the height of the cylinder
Given, r = 20 cm
240000 = π(20)²h
240000 = π(400)h
πh = 240000/400
πh = 2400/4
πh = 600
h = 600/π
h = 600/3.14
h = 191.08 cm
Therefore, the height of water in the cylindrical vessel is 191 cm.
✦ Try This: Rain water which falls on a flat rectangular surface of length 4 m and breadth 3 m is transferred into a cylindrical vessel of internal radius 10 cm. What will be the height of water in the cylindrical vessel if the rain fall is 0.5 cm. Give your answer to the nearest integer. (Take π = 3.14)
