Value Added Tax is the price added to the original price.

Let the price before VAT = Rs. x

Therefore,

x + VAT% of x = Rs. 36.40

x + 4% of x = 36.40

x + 0.04x = 36.40

1.04x = 36.40

x = Rs. 35
