Prachi bought medicines from a medical store as prescribed by her doctor for Rs 36.40 including 4% VAT. Find the price before VAT was added
Solution:
Value Added Tax is the price added to the original price.
Let the price before VAT = Rs. x
Therefore,
x + VAT% of x = Rs. 36.40
x + 4% of x = 36.40
x + 0.04x = 36.40
1.04x = 36.40
x = Rs. 35
✦ Try This: Ajay bought medicines from a medical store as prescribed by his doctor for Rs 50.16 including 4.5% VAT. Find the price before VAT was added.
Let the price before VAT = Rs. x
Therefore,
x + VAT% of x = Rs. 50.16
x + 4.5% of x = 50.16
x + 0.045x = 50.16
1.045x = 50.16
x = Rs. 48
