Plot the points A (1, -1) and B (4, 5). Extend this line segment and write the coordinates of a point on this line which lies outside the line segment AB
Solution:
Given, the points are A(1, -1) and B(4, 5).
A line segment is drawn joining these points.
We have to write the coordinates of a point on this line which lies outside the line segment AB.
Considering the point A(1, -1)
The x-coordinate is positive and the y-coordinate is negative
The point A lies in the fourth quadrant
Considering the point B(4, 5)
The x-coordinate is positive and the y-coordinate is positive
The point B lies in the first quadrant
On plotting the points A and B and joining them,
AB is a line segment.
Now extend the line segment AB.
Draw a perpendicular from x-axis such that it intersects the extended line segment at Q.
The perpendicular from x = 5 meets the extended line segment at Q.
Now draw a perpendicular from the y-axis such that it intersects at Q.
The perpendicular from y = 7 intersects Q
Therefore, the coordinates of the point Q are (5, 7)
✦ Try This: On a graph paper, plot the points (0, 1), (1, 3), (2, 5). Are they collinear? If so, draw the line that passes through them. Show any point in the third quadrant which lies on this line. Write the coordinates of the point.
