One of the two numbers is twice the other. The sum of the numbers is 12. Find the numbers

Solution:

Let the first number be x

Then the other number be 2x

2x + x = 12

3x = 12

x = 12/3

x = 4

Hence, 2x = 8

Thus, the numbers are 4 and 8.

Let the first number be x

Then the other number be 3x

3x + x = 16

4x = 16

x = 16/4

x = 4

Hence, 3x = 12

Thus, the numbers are 4 and 12.
