NCERT solutions for class 11 maths chapter 9 exercise 9.3 Sequences and Series throws light on some special sequences where the terms follow a definite order, in a way that each term is in a constant ratio to its preceding term. These sequences are known as the geometric sequence or geometric progression also written as G.P.

If the first term is ‘a’, then the geometric progression would be a, ar, ar², ar³ ,…., where ‘r’ is the common ratio of the G.P.

The students must remember that the n^th term of a G.P. is calculated by a_n = ar^n-1

And, that the sum of n terms of a G.P. can be found by the formula :

S_n = a + ar + ar² +...+ ar^n–1

Also, if A and G are the A.M. and G.M. of any two positive real numbers ‘a’ and ‘b’,

Then, A = (a+b)/2 and G =√(ab)

Hence, we can say A – G = (a+b)/2 - √(ab) which results in (√a- √b)²/2 ≥ 0

This relationship shows that A ≥ G ( Arithmetic Mean is greater than equal to the Geometric Mean).
