Multiply and reduce to lowest form and convert into a mixed fraction:
(i) 7 × 3/5 (ii) 4 × 1/3 (iii) 2 × 6/7 (iv) 5 × 2/9
(v) 2/3 × 4 (vi) 5/2 × 6 (vii) 11 × 4/7 (viii) 20 × 4/5
(ix) 13 × 1/3 (x) 15 × 3/5
Solution:
A fraction is equal parts of a whole thing where numerator represents the number of equal parts and denominator represents equal parts of the whole thing.
To find the product, we will multiply numerator with numerator and denominator with denominator.
Here first we will change the mixed fraction into an improper fraction.
i) 7 × 3/5
= 21/5 (improper fraction)
Converting 21/5 into a mixed fraction, we get = \(4{\Large\frac{1}{5}}\)
ii) 4 × 1/3
= 4/3 (by simplifying the and reducing it to its lowest term)
= \(1{\Large\frac{1}{3}}\)
iii) 2 × 6/7
= 12/7 (by simplifying the and reducing it to its lowest term)
= \(1{\Large\frac{5}{7}}\)
iv) 5 × 2/9
= 10/9 (improper fraction)
Converting 10/9 into a mixed fraction we get: \(1{\Large\frac{1}{9}}\)
v) 2/3 × 4
= 8/3 (by simplifying the and reducing it to its lowest term)
= \(2{\Large\frac{2}{3}}\)
vi) 5/2 × 6
= 5 × 3
= 15
vii) 11 × 4/7
= 44/7 (improper fraction)
Converting 44/7 into mixed fraction, we get rid of: \(6{\Large\frac{2}{7}}\)
viii) 20 × 4/5
= 80/5
= 16
ix) 13 × 1/3
= 13/3 (improper fraction)
Converting 13/3 into mixed fraction, we get: \(4{\Large\frac{1}{3}}\)
x) 15 × 3/5
= 3 × 3
= 9
