Multiply and express as a mixed fraction:
(a) 3 × \(5{\Large\frac{1}{5}}\) (b) 5 × \(6{\Large\frac{3}{4}}\) (c) 7 × \(2{\Large\frac{1}{4}}\)
(d) 4 × \(6{\Large\frac{1}{3}}\) (e) \(3{\Large\frac{1}{4}}\) × 6 (f) \(3{\Large\frac{2}{5}}\)× 8
Solution:
A fraction is equal parts of a whole thing where the numerator represents the number of equal parts and the denominator represents equal parts of the whole thing.
We will multiply numerator with numerator and denominator with denominator.
Here first we will change the mixed fraction into an improper fraction.
(a) 3 × \(5{\Large\frac{1}{5}}\) = 3 × 26/5
= (3 × 26)/5
= 78/5 ( improper fraction )
Converting 78/5 into mixed fraction, we get
78/5 = \(15{\Large\frac{3}{5}}\)
(b) 5 × \(6{\Large\frac{3}{4}}\) = 5 × 27/4
= (5 × 27)/4
= 135/4 ( improper fraction )
Converting 135/4 into mixed fraction, we get
135/4 = \(33{\Large\frac{3}{4}}\)
(c) 7 ×\(2{\Large\frac{1}{4}}\)= 7 × 9/4
= (7 × 9)/4
= 63/4 ( improper fraction )
Converting 63/4 into mixed fraction, we get
63/4 = \(15{\Large\frac{3}{4}}\)
(d) 4 × \(6{\Large\frac{1}{3}}\) = 4 × 19/3
= (4 × 19)/3
= 76/3 ( improper fraction )
Converting 76/3 into mixed fraction, we get
76/3 = \(25{\Large\frac{1}{3}}\)
(e) \(3{\Large\frac{1}{4}}\) × 6 = (13/4) × 6
= (13 × 6)/4
= 78/4 ( improper fraction )
Converting 78/4 into mixed fraction, we get
78/4 = \(19{\Large\frac{1}{4}}\)
(f) \(3{\Large\frac{2}{5}}\) × 8
= (17/5) × 8
= (17 × 8)/5
= 136/5 ( improper fraction )
Converting 136/5 into mixed fraction, we get
136/5 = \(27{\Large\frac{1}{5}}\)
