Many schools have a recommended students-teacher ratio as 35:1. Next year, school expects an increase in enrolment by 280 students. How many new teachers will they have to appoint to maintain the students-teacher ratio?
Solution:
To maintain the student teacher ratio of 35:1 then the number of teachers appointed will be in proportion with the additional 280 students. In other words:
Number of Students No. of Teachers
35 1
280 x = ?
The additional number of teachers that shall be appointed with the addition of 280 students will be:
x = 1 × 280/35
x = 8
Therefore with the addition of 280 students 8 additional teachers will be appointed. By doing so the Student:Teacher ratio of 35:1 will be maintained.
✦ Try This: Many schools have a recommended students-teacher ratio as 30:1. Next year, school expects an increase in enrolment by 270 students. How many new teachers will they have to appoint to maintain the students-teacher ratio?
To maintain the student teacher ratio of 35:1 then the number of teachers appointed will be in proportion with the additional 280 students. In other words:
Number of Students No. of Teachers
30 1
270 x = ?
The additional number of teachers that shall be appointed with the addition of 280 students will be:
x = 1 × 270/30
x = 9
Therefore with the addition of 270 students 9 additional teachers will be appointed. By doing so the Student:Teacher ratio of 30:1 will be maintained.
