Let us consider the Example 3 of Section 3.2. Will the rails cross each other?
Solution:
Given, the pair of linear equations formed.
x + 2y - 4 = 0 be equation 1
2x + 4y - 12 = 0 be equation 2
From equation 1
⇒ x = 4 - 2y be equation (3).
Substitute the value of x = 4 - 2y in Equation (2)
2(4 - 2y) + 4y – 12 = 0
⇒ 8 - 12 = 0
⇒ - 4 = 0
The statement is false.
Thus, the given pair of equations does not have a common solution. Hence the two rails will not cross each other.
