Solution:

Sales Tax is calculated on the Sales Price. Jyotsana bought the product for Rs. 3155 which is inclusive of sales tax. Therefore we can write:

Original price  + 4.5 % on the original price = SP

Let the original price, that is, before tax be x.

x + (4.5/100)x = 3155

315500 = 104.5x

3155 = 1.045x

x = 3155/1.045

x = Rs. 3019.14
