Insert a rational number and an irrational number between -2/5 and 1/2
Solution:
Given, the numbers -2/5 and 1/2
Rational numbers are numbers which are in the form of p/q, where q is not equal to 0, p and q are integers.
Irrational numbers are numbers which are in decimal form.
To find a rational number R, we use the formula,
R = (p + q)/2
Let p = -2/5 and q = 1/2, we get,
p + q = -2/5 + 1/2
= (-4 + 5)/10
= 1/10
R = (1/10)/2
R = 1/20.
R = 0.05
To find an irrational number Q, we use the formula,
Q = √pq
where p and q are not perfect squares.
Q = √(-2/5) × (1/2)
Q = √(-0.4) × (0.5)
Q = 0.4472135955…
Therefore, the rational number is 0.05 and the irrational number is 0.4472135955…
