In Fig. 3.6, LM is a line parallel to the y-axis at a distance of 3 units. What is the difference between the abscissa of the points L and M
Solution:
Given, LM is a line parallel to the y-axis at a distance of 3 units.
We have to find the difference between the abscissa of the points L and M.
From the figure,
The perpendicular distance of the point L from the x-axis is 4 units and y-axis is 3
The coordinate of the point L = (3, 4)
The perpendicular distance of the point M from the x-axis is 3 units and the negative y-axis is 3 units.
The coordinate of the point M = (3, -3)
The horizontal coordinate of a point in a plane cartesian coordinate system obtained by measuring parallel to the x-axis is called the abscissa of the point.
The abscissa of the point L is 3
The abscissa of the point M is 3.
Difference = 3 - 3 = 0
Therefore, the difference between the abscissa of the points L and M is 0.
