In direct proportion a₁/b₁ _________a₂/b₂

Solution:

When two ratios a₁/b₁ and a₂/b₂ are in direct proportion we can then write

a₁/b₁ = a₂/b₂

For example

1) 2/3 = 4/6

2) 8/12 = 16/24

Also when:

a₁/b₁ = a₂/b₂

a₁b₂ = a₂b₁

Therefore:

2/3 = 4/6

2 × 6 = 4 × 3

In inverse proportion:

a₁/b₁ = b₂/ a₂ which implies

a₁∝ 1/a₂

b₂ ∝ 1/b₁

and

a₁a₂ = b₁ b₂

Hence we can state, that in an inverse proportion a₁/b₂ = b₁/ a₂
