In a diagnostic test in mathematics given to students, the following marks (out of 100) are recorded :
46, 52, 48, 11, 41, 62, 54, 53, 96, 40, 98, 44
Which ‘average’ will be a good representative of the above data and why?
Solution:
Median represents the middle value for any group. It is the point at which half the data is more and half the data is less.
Median helps to represent a large number of data points with a single data point. The median is the easiest statistical measure to calculate.
For calculation of median, the data has to be arranged in ascending order, and then the middlemost data point represents the median of the data.
An example to figure out the median for a given set of data.
Step I: Let us take the data: 4, 4, 6, 3, and 2. By arranging in ascending order: 2, 3, 4, 4, 6.
Step II: Counting the number of values we know that there are 5 values.
Step III: The middle value here is the median. Therefore, median = 4.
In this question, median will be good representative
1. Each value occurs only once.
2. Extreme values influence the data.
Therefore, the median will be a good representative of the above data.
