In a class of 60 students, the number of girls is one third the number of boys. Find the number of girls and boys in the class
Solution:
Let the number of boys be x
Then the number of girls be (60 - x)
The linear equation we get is
(60 - x) = x/3
x + x/3 = 60
4x/3 = 60
x = 60.(3/4)
x = 45
Hence, 60 - x = 15
Thus, the number of girls and boys in the class are 15 and 45 respectively.
✦ Try This: In a class of 75 students, the number of girls is two third the number of boys. Find the number of girls and boys in the class.
Let the number of boys be x
Then the number of girls be (75 - x)
A/Q
(75 - x) = 2x/3
2x/3 + x = 75
5x/3 = 75
5x = 75.(3)
x = 225/5
x = 45
Hence, 75 - 45 = 30
Thus, the number of girls and boys in the class are 30 and 45 respectively.
