Solution:

If x varies inversely as y can symbolically stated as:

x ∝ 1/y

xy = k

So when x = 4 and y = 6

k = xy = 4 × 6 = 24

When x = 3 then y will be:

xy = 24 (∵ xy = k and k = 24)

3y = 24

y = 8

If x varies inversely as y can symbolically stated as:

x ∝ 1/y

xy = k

So when x = 6 and y = 9

k = xy = 6 × 9 = 54

When x = 12 then y will be:

xy = 54 (∵ xy = k and k = 54)

27y = 54

y = 54/27

y = 2
