If x = 1/10 and y = -3/8 then evaluate x + y, x - y, x × y and x ÷ y.
Solution:
Given, x = 1/10 and y = -3/8
We have to find x + y, x - y, x × y and x ÷ y.
a) x + y = 1/10 + (-3/8)
On simplification,
x + y = [1(8) + (-3)(10)] / 10(8)
= (8 - 30)/80
= -22/80
= -11/40
Therefore, x + y = -11/22
b) x - y = 1/10 - (-3/8)
On simplification,
x - y = [1(8) - (-3)(10)] / 10(8)
= (8 - (-30))/80
= (8 + 30)/80
= 88/80
= 11/40
Therefore, x - y = 11/40
c) x × y = (1/10) × (-3/8)
= 1×(-3) / (10 × 8)
If the signs of the factors are different, the product is negative.
= -3/80
Therefore, x × y = -3/80
d) x ÷ y = (1/10) ÷ (-3/8)
Reciprocal of -3/8 = 1/(-3/8)
= -8/3
So, (1/10) ÷ (-8/3) = 1 × (-8) / 10 × 3
If the signs of the factors are different, the product is negative.
= -8/30
= -4/15
Therefore, x ÷ y = -4/15.
