If a = -1, b = 2, then find the value of the following: ab + ba
Solution:
Given, a = -1 and b = 2.
We have to find the value of ab + ba
ab + ba = (-1)² + (2)⁻¹
(-1)² = -1 × -1 = 1
Using the law of exponents,
a⁻ⁿ = 1/aⁿ
(2)⁻¹ = 1/2
(-1)² + (2)⁻¹ = 1 + 1/2
= (2 + 1)/2
= 3/2
Therefore, ab + ba = 3/2
✦ Try This: If a = 2, b = -2, then find the value of the following: ab + ba
