If 213x27 is divisible by 9, then the value of x is 0. Is the given statement true or false?
Solution:
A number is divisible by 9 if the sum of the digits of the number is divisible by 9. Therefore,
2 + 1 + 3 + x + 2 + 7 = 9 or 18 or 27 …..
17 + x = 9 or 18 or 27….
Now 17 + x cannot be equal to 9
Therefore
17 + x = 18
x = 1
Also
17 + x = 27
x = 27 - 17 = 10
But x cannot be a double digit number. It has to be a single digit number. Hence,
x = 1
The statement of the problem is therefore False(F)
✦ Try This: If 42763x8 is divisible by 8 then the value of x is 2. Is the given statement true or false?
If a number is divisible by 8 its last three digits are divisible by 8.
In the given number i.e. 42763x8 will be divisible by 8 if 3x8 is divisible by 8.
3x8 will be divisible by 8 if x = 2 or 6
Hence the given statement is true.
