If 1AB + CCA = 697 and there is no carry-over in addition, find the value of A + B + C.
Solution:
Rewriting the problem statement we have
1 A B
C C A
6 9 7
Since there is no carry over we can say
1 + C = 6
C = 5
A + C = 9
A = 9 - 5 = 4
B + A = 7
B = 3
A + B + C = 4 +3 + 5 = 12
✦ Try This: If 2AB + CCA = 897 and there is no carry-over in addition, find the value of A + B + C.
Rewriting the problem statement we have
2 A B
C C A
8 9 7
Since there is no carry over we can say
2 + C = 8
C = 6
A + C = 9
A = 9 - 6 = 3
B + A = 7
B + 3 = 7
B = 7 - 3 = 4
A + B + C = 3 + 4 + 6 = 13
