Identify the rational number that does not belong with the other three. Explain your reasoning -5/11, -1/2, -4/9, -7/3
Solution:
Given set of rational numbers -5/11, -1/2, -4/9, -7/3
-5/4 = -0.45454545….
-½ =-0.5
-4/9 = -0.44444….
-7/3 = -2.3333..
Terminating decimals certainly end after decimal point.
Non terminating decimals continue after decimal point and never end.
Out of the given numbers, -½ is terminating whereas the remaining ones are non terminating decimals
✦ Try This: Identify the rational number that does not belong with the other three. Explain your reasoning -5/3, -2/5, -4/9, -8/27
Given set of rational numbers -5/3, -2/5, -4/9, -8/27
-5/3 = -1.6666….
-2/5 = -0.4
-4/9 = -0.44444….
-8/27 = -0.296296296….
Thus -2/5 is a terminating decimal, whereas the other rational numbers are non-terminating ones. Thus -2/5 is the odd one out.
