How many cubes each of side 0.5 cm are required to build a cube of volume 8 cm³?
Solution:
A volume of 8cm³ means that the cube has edges measuring 2cm because volume of a cube is given as:
V = s³, where s is the edge of the cube
V = 8
Therefore
s³ = 8
s = 2
Therefore a cube of volume 8 cm³ has an edge of 2 cm
Therefore the number of 0.5cm cubes required to make an edge of 2cm cube is = 2/0.5 = 4
Hence the total number of 0.5cm edge cubes required to achieve the volume of 8cm³ = 4 × 4 × 4 = 64
✦ Try This: How many cubes each of side 1 cm are required to build a cube of volume 125cm³?
A volume of 125cm³ means that the cube has edges measuring 5cm because volume of a cube is given as:
V = s³, where s is the edge of the cube
V = 125cm³
Therefore
s³ = 125cm³
s = 5cm
Therefore a cube of volume 125 cm³ has an edge of 5 cm
Therefore the number of 1.0 cm cubes required to make an edge of 5 cm edge cube is = 5/1 = 5
Hence the total number of 1.0 cm edge cubes required to achieve the volume of 125 cm³ = 5 × 5 × 5 = 125.
