For which of the following figures, diagonals are equal?
(a) Trapezium
(b) Rhombus
(c) Parallelogram
(d) Rectangle
Solution:
We have to find the figure in which the diagonals are equal.
(i) A trapezium is a two-dimensional quadrilateral having a pair of parallel opposite sides.
The opposite parallel sides are referred to as the base and the non-parallel sides are referred to as legs of the trapezium. The diagonals intersect each other.
(ii) A rhombus can be defined as a special parallelogram as it fulfills the requirements of a parallelogram, i.e. a quadrilateral with two pairs of parallel sides.
A rhombus has all four sides equal just like a square. That is why it is also known as a tilted square. The diagonals bisect each other at right angles.
(iii) A parallelogram is defined as a quadrilateral in which both pairs of opposite sides are parallel and equal. The diagonals bisect each other.
(iv) A rectangle is a closed two-dimensional figure with four sides. The opposite sides of a rectangle are equal and parallel to each other and all the angles of a rectangle are equal to 90 degrees. The two diagonals bisect each other and divide the rectangle into two equal parts. The length of the two diagonals is equal.
