Following number line shows the temperature in degree Celsius(°C) at different places on a particular day
(a) Observe this number line and write the temperature of the places marked on it.
(b) What is the temperature difference between the hottest and the coldest places among the above?
(c) What is the temperature difference between Lahulspiti and Srinagar?
(d) Can we say temperature of Srinagar and Shimla taken together is less than the temperature at Shimla? Is it also less than the temperature at Srinagar?
Solution:
(a) Let us observe the number line given in the question, we can determine the temperature of the cities as follows,
The temperature at Lahulspiti is equal to - 8oC
The temperature at Srinagar is equal to - 2oC
The temperature at Shimla is equal to 5oC
The temperature at the Ooty is equal to 14oC
The temperature at Bengaluru is equal to 22oC
(b) The difference between the temperature of the hottest and the coldest place is,
Temperature at Bengaluru - Temperature at Lahulspiti
= 22°C - (- 8°C)
= 22°C + 8°C
= 30°C
Remember that for subtraction, we add the additive inverse of the integer subtracted to the other integer.
The additive inverse of 8 is - 8 and therefore, we added 22 and 8 to get the answer.
(c) Temperature of Srinagar: - 2°C
Temperature of Lahulspiti: - 8°C
Although the absolute value of the temperature of Lahulspiti is higher than that of Srinagar, it is a negative integer and thus, it is lower.
Therefore, the difference between the temperature is:
-2°C - (- 8°C) = - 2°C + 8°C
= 8°C - 2°C
= 6°C
(d) Temperature of Srinagar and Shimla together
= - 2°C + 5°C
= 3°C
So, we can say that the temperature of Srinagar and Shimla, taken together is lesser than the temperature of Shimla.
3°C < 5° C
But the temperature of Srinagar and Shimla taken together is not lesser than the temperature of Srinagar.
-2°C < 3°C
