Following cards are put facing down:
A E I O U
What is the chance of drawing out
(a) a vowel
(b) A or I
(c) a card marked U
(d) a consonant
Solution:
Given, A E I O U are the cards put facing down.
Chance of drawing a card = number of favourable card/total number of cards
(a) We have to find the chance of drawing out a vowel.
Favoruable card = A, E, I, O, U
Number of favourable card = 5
Total number of cards = 5
Chance of drawing out a vowel = 5/5 = 1
Therefore, the chance of drawing out a vowel is 1.
(b) We have to find the chance of drawing out A or I.
Favoruable card = A, I
Number of favourable card = 2
Total number of cards = 5
Chance of drawing out a vowel = 2/5
Therefore, the chance of drawing out A or I is 2/5.
(c) We have to find the chance of drawing out a card marked U.
Favoruable card = U
Number of favourable card = 1
Total number of cards = 5
Chance of drawing out a vowel = 1/5
Therefore, the chance of drawing out a card marked U is 1/5
(d) We have to find the chance of drawing out a consonant.
Favoruable card = cards without vowel
Number of favourable card = 0
Total number of cards = 5
Chance of drawing out a vowel = 0/5 = 0
Therefore, the chance of drawing out a consonant is 0.
