Find the reciprocal of the following: (-5 × 12/15) - (-3 × 2/9)
Solution:
Given, (-5 × 12/15) - (-3 × 2/9)
We have to find the reciprocal of the given expression.
Considering -5 × 12/15,
-5 × 12/15 = (-5) × 12 / 15
= (-5) × 4 / 5
= (-1) × 4
= -4
Considering -3 × 2/9,
-3 × 2/9 = (-3) × 2 / 9
= (-1) × 2 / 3
= -2/3
Now, (-5 × 12/15) - (-3 × 2/9) = -4 - (-2/3)
= -4 + 2/3
On simplification,
= [-4(3) + 2] / 3
= [-12 + 2]/3
= -10/3
Reciprocal means an expression which when multiplied by another expression, gives unity (1) as a result.
The reciprocal of any quantity is, one divided by that quantity.
Reciprocal of -10/3 = 1/(-10/3)
= -3/10
Therefore, the reciprocal is -3/10.
