Find: i) 2/5 ÷ 1/2 ii) 4/9 ÷ 2/3 iii) 3/7 ÷ 8/7
iv) \(2{\Large\frac{1}{3}}\) ÷ 3/5 v) \(3{\Large\frac{1}{2}}\) ÷ 8/3 vi) 2/5 ÷ \(1{\Large\frac{1}{2}}\)
vii) \(3{\Large\frac{1}{5}}\) ÷ \(1{\Large\frac{2}{3}}\) viii) \(2{\Large\frac{1}{5}}\) ÷ \(1{\Large\frac{1}{5}}\)
Solution:
To divide a fraction, we will reciprocate the second fraction and then multiply the fraction with the reciprocal. If one number is a whole number then we will convert it into a fraction by using 1 as the denominator.
(i) 2/5 ÷ 1/2 = 2/5 × 2/1
= 4/5
(ii) 4/9 ÷ 2/3 = 4/9 × 3/2
= 12/18
= 2/3
(iii) 3/7 ÷ 8/7 = 3/7 × 7/8
= 21/56
= 3/8
(iv) \(2{\Large\frac{1}{3}}\) ÷ 3/5 = \(2{\Large\frac{1}{3}}\) × 5/3
= 7/3 × 5/3
= 35/9 (improper fraction)
Converting 35/9 into mixed fraction, we get
35/9 = \(3{\Large\frac{8}{9}}\)
(v) \(3{\Large\frac{1}{2}}\) ÷ 8/3 = 7/2 × 3/8
= 21/16 (improper fraction)
Converting 21/16 into mixed fraction, we get
21/16 = \(1{\Large\frac{5}{16}}\)
(vi) 2/5 ÷ \(1{\Large\frac{1}{2}}\) = 2/5 × 2/3
= 4/15
(vii) \(3{\Large\frac{1}{5}}\) ÷ \(1{\Large\frac{2}{3}}\) = 16/5 ÷ 5/3
= 16/5 × 3/5
= 48/25 (improper fraction)
Converting 48/25 into mixed fraction, we get
48/25 = \(1{\Large\frac{23}{25}}\)
(viii ) \(2{\Large\frac{1}{5}}\) ÷ \(1{\Large\frac{1}{5}}\) = 11/5 ÷ 6/5
= 11/5 × 5/6
= 11/6 (improper fraction)
Converting 11/6 into mixed fraction, we get
11/6 = \(1{\Large\frac{5}{6}}\)
